Just a quick message from the studio where these illustrations are being done.
I am always happy when I finish one. This time though, I had wanted to do a different sign – an Irish H. I do not know what happened. Maybe I was just very tired last night, or it was my subconscious speaking (probably!), and the H ended up becoming an ILY-sign.
I just noticed it a minute ago, when I was about to lable it “H” and saw that something was a bit off – more specifically, the thumb was not where it was supposed to be.
So this is like most things in life: Mistakes are only mistakes if you look at them from a certain point of view – in this case, from the point of view of the Irish “H”.
Here, my mistake became a “I LOVE YOU” sign. Quite a nice “error” to make, because it is not an error at all. It is just a quick side note to all of you.
Even though I know most of you will never write a comment, I can see that you are visiting me, and I am loving the emails that I am getting. Thank you so very much!
This is for YOU!
The coolKIDS illustrations are part of a project for children who are confronted with the sign language alphabet at a later point in their life.
There is a lot of material out there for very young children, and then there is the more neutral material for adults. So far I have seen little of interest between these two aspects, especially not for young people in the age where hero figures become more important and self valor and self-esteem are questioned for the first time.
I hope that the coolKIDS manage to fill this gap in a meaningful way, by providing material that celebrates the hand signs as something cool to know for kids of all backgrounds. A knowledge, that is supposed to make you more rather than less interesting.
Two digital books are being prepared right now by LegendaryMedia and myself: a German and an American version of the Fingeralphabet coolKIDS.
