coolKIDS Preview for W

fingeralphabet coolKIDS Preview W

I really do like this girl. She is one of my favorites.

It is sometimes difficult to decide which kid to use for which sign, and the further I am and the less signs are left to do, the fewer choices I have. It is one thing to be fingerspelling and in movement, it is quite another to be frozen in time forever in one position.

When choosing the kids, I also have to have a look at the sequence: who is doing the sign before her, and who is after her? Is it too much of the same? Too many girls in a row? Not enough contrast? Always the same way to stand?

In the light of the fact that the images are going to end up in a book, these questions are rather important. And it is not really an easy choice.

Fingeralphabet coolKIDS

The coolKIDS illustrations are part of a project for children who are confronted with the sign language alphabet at a later point in their life.

There is a lot of material out there for very young children, and then there is the more neutral material for adults. So far I have seen little of interest between these two aspects, especially not for young people in the age where hero figures become more important and self valor and self-esteem are questioned for the first time.

I hope that the coolKIDS manage to fill this gap in a meaningful way, by providing material that celebrates the hand signs as something cool to know for kids of all backgrounds. A knowledge that is supposed to make you more rather than less interesting.

Two digital books are being prepared right now by LegendaryMedia and myself: a German and an American version of the Fingeralphabet coolKIDS.
